Effective with claims received on or after May 22, 2008, Medicare will not pay for claims where the NPI is not provided in the ‘Secondary Provider’ ID fields when a ‘Secondary Provider’ is included on the claim. Secondary Providers include Ordering, Referring, Attending, Operating, Other, and Service Facility.

If an NPI from the Ordering, Referring, Attending, Operating, Other, Service Facility or Purchased Service provider cannot be obtained, CMS has instructed that you may report your own name and NPI in the claims Ordering/Referring/Attending/Operating/Other/Service Facility or Purchased Service Provider fields.
